Hung Nghiep Company won the Second Prize in the Architectural Design Competition of Rach Gia Bridge, Kien Giang Province - "The Imprint of the Origin”

The design concept originated from the Milky Mangroves (Scientific name: Excoecaria agallocha), one of the typical trees of the Mekong Delta. The design must meet the criteria of the competition: "Beautiful - Unique - Worthy". The architectural design option was required to express these iconic images in the main shape of the overall archictural works. The bridge should have a memorable look, aesthetics and be a piece of art on the water surface in order to express the appearance and unique identity of Rach Gia City.

After studying and taking into consideration of a series of design options, the Consultant decided to select the design option with ideas originating from the milky mangroves, a tree that beared the origin imprint of Rach Gia city, specifically:

The interbedded arch and pillar systems remind us of the typical root system of milky mangrove forests in the coastal area of Rach Gia, and is not similar to any bridges that have been built in Vietnam or all over the world.

The bridge-shaped formation simulated the typical features of Cai Lon and Cai Be rivers running side by side before merging into the sea. The romantic, harmonious image between nature and the bridge reflect a unique mark of Rach Gia City.

In addition to the satisfaction of the strict requirements of the architectural design, the designed bridge must ensure the following technical criteria:

• Ensure the navigation chamber (BxH=80mx10m) to facilitate the circulation of ships and boats through Rach Gia Bay.
• Ensure the height of the architectural structure shall not exceed the nagivation clearance limit of +45m.
• Limit the land acquisition & clearance and meet the economic (cost-saving) and technical requirements.
• Ensure effective exploitation, enhance the circulation capacity of vehicles.

The Bridge Project on the coastal route interconnecting Rach Gia City and An Bien District, Kien Giang Province has a total length of 3.71km  including bridge and bridge approach roads.

When completed, Rach Gia Bridge will connect important traffic routes of the Southwest region of the South Vietnam and be an iconic, advanced, modern architectural structure at the estuary of Rach Gia Bay. The structure will be a symbol associated with Rach Gia City in the future, a place for entertainment, sightseeing and  spectacular views of river and sea for local people, domestic and foreign tourists as well.
